Cup-Driven Maturity

Definition

Cup-Driven Maturity is a roast phenomenon where batch readiness is confirmed through observable cup behavior across consecutive batches, rather than through roasting machine data points alone. The cup is the final authority on whether the batch is complete.

In Plain Terms

The sweetness and structure were confirmed in the cup not by the machine.

Observable Conditions

— Cup behavior is consistent and stable across consecutive batches of the same lot
— Structural and aromatic qualities are present and integrated at the time of tasting
— Machine data is recorded and referenced, but does not serve as the primary confirmation of maturity
— The roaster's cup observation determines release readiness

Relation to Conventional Framework

In conventional roasting, development is often confirmed through machine events first crack timing, rate of rise, drop temperature targets. Cup-Driven Maturity does not reject these data points. It repositions them: machine data is context, not conclusion. The cup is conclusion.
